De-railed education project

Author: Daily Times

Sir: The news that De-centralised Elementary Education Project (Deep), one of the biggest ever initiated at the behest of the Asian Development Bank, has been shelved by the Bank authorities for lack of proper response of the Sindh provincial government is extremely disappointing. The ADB project was started in agreement with the federal and provincial governments back in 2003 and had to be completed by the year 2009. The scheme envisioned up-gradation of 1200 primary schools to the middle level, besides providing them with laboratories and new buildings. In addition, 1000 English medium schools, 350 model schools, and a nursery school for boys and girls in each union council were to be established in Sindh. 1200 coverless schools were to be provided concrete roofs. Funds were also allocated for the fresh appointment of 7000 teachers and training of 12000 teachers. The inadequate funds allocated for education in the national budget and abandonment of valuable projects such as DEEP reflects a lackadaisical attitude of the authorities towards education in Sindh.
