Annoying encroachments

Author: Daily Times

Sir: It has been reported that the city government of Lahore is planning a city-wide drive to remove illegal encroachments. This is a welcome move that is bound to bring some relief to the roads of Lahore. In many high traffic areas, traffic jams often occur because much of the road is blocked by illegal encroachments. Clearing up the roads will not solve the traffic problem completely, but at least it will provide temporary relief in the form of reduced congestion on the roads. However, such drives have been initiated in the past with little effect. This time, the local government needs to back up its words and initial action with continued monitoring of roads to ensure that these encroachments don’t resurface. Heavy fines should be issued to those encroaching on roads.
