Sir: The PPP-led coalition government deserves praise for increasing the support price of wheat from the previous Rs 625 to Rs 950 per 40 kg. This timely and wise decision of the government will go a long way in encouraging farmers to grow more wheat. In addition to this welcome measure, relevant authorities should organise farmers’ meets regularly, so that growers, suppliers, agricultural experts, economists and land owners can meet and share ideas on how to improve their productivity and how to best market their produce. Training projects should also be initiated to ensure that our farmers are aware of the latest farming techniques in the world, and are therefore enabled to work in a more productive and environment friendly manner, and can help the country become self-reliant in food and livestock.
