Besieged?

Sir: Many citizens of Islamabad are complaining about the heightened security following the Marriott blast. However, they must realise that these arrangements are there to protect them from terrorists. The term ‘siege’ is being used by residents while talking to the TV channels, but why do they not complain about the real siege of the city, i.e. the dozens of illegal jihadi madrassas that have the capacity to cause a lot of damage. Maybe if these citizens were aware of ground realities, they would have fully backed the government and given legitimacy to the removal of these jihadi outposts. The problem is not the security; people need to first question why the security is there in the first place. The national state of denial over the threat of terrorism is reaching ridiculous proportions. The media must do its job of educating the public without injecting its bulletins and analyses with jingoism and apologies for terrorism. But the people, too, need to use their minds for a change. I fully support the heightened security arrangements in Islamabad and commend the departments who are working around the clock to protect us.
