Peace in the Middle East

Author: Daily Times

Sir: This is with reference to recent developments in the Middle East. It seems that the Israelis themselves are now becoming mature and reasonable about the future of their country, but at the same time, they are also confused and afraid.

A major point of contention is the future of Jerusalem. The city is important to both the Israeli and the Palestinians. Dividing the city is one option, but hardliners from both sides would disagree with this proposal. There is another possibility, however: declare the city neutral, open to citizens of both Israel and the Palestinian state. Both sides would have their administrative capitals elsewhere, leaving Jerusalem open to religious activities under an administration comprising carefully vetted officials from both sides.
