Sir: This is with reference to Brian Cloughley’s “Brothers in barbarity”. (Daily Times, December 31) Mr Cloughley is absolutely right in pointing out that both sides that are currently engaged in conflict are essentially pursuing their own interests without caring about the innocent civilians of Gaza. Hamas wanted to provoke Israel into action so that it could further cement its position as the main force in Gaza, while Israel wants to flex its muscle and wage a “final” war against Hamas. This has had a terrible effect on an already troubled region. The poor people of Gaza, who have been blockaded for months without food, medicines and supplies, are now dying by the dozen and there is no help forthcoming. It is sad that the United States is standing by silently without behaving like a responsible superpower and restraining its ally. Unless there is pragmatism and patience displayed by all stakeholders in the Middle East, there will never be peace.
