Sir: There have been several incidences over the past few weeks when the relatives of VVIPs have physically threatened workers at local power authority offices, and have intimidated them into ensuring 24-hour power supply to their homes. The scared workers have had to do this at the expense of other localities, who have to suffer the burden of extra load shedding. It is sad that even in a time of national crisis, VVIPs are not ready to carry their share of the burden. The government, keeping in mind its promises of austerity, transparency and accountability, should ensure that such high-handedness should not be employed to gain unfair advantage, and that everyone acts according to the rules. Else, the rate at which the public is losing faith in the system will speed up.
