Sir: This is with reference to Salman Tarik Kureshi’s timely reminder of the dangers posed by nuclear weapons, especially in a volatile region like South Asia. (“Nuclear facts and fictions”, Daily Times, January 31) Mr Kureshi is absolutely right in pointing out that instead of being proud of our nukes, and beating our chests and eyeballing our enemies, we should instead keep a cool head and work towards resolving our crises through dialogue and sensible moves. The destruction that can be unleashed by nuclear weapons is unthinkable, and given the geographical proximity of India and Pakistan, no one will escape the consequences. Therefore, instead of loudly calling for the use of the nuclear option against the enemy, we should consider the consequences. Peace is the best option for all inhabitants of South Asia, not war.
