Sir: Jinnah perceived Pakistan to be a progressive and democratic society that would give equal rights to the minorities living in it. In his speech on August 11, 1947, he said: “If you change your past and work together in a spirit that every one of you, no matter to what community he belongs, no matter what relations he had with you in the past, no matter what is his colour, caste or creed, is first, second and last a citizen of this State with equal rights, privileges and obligations, there will be no end to the progress you will make.”
Unfortunately, the ruling factions of the 1970s and 80s gave much support to the obscurantist forces. Due to the institutionalisation of segregation, the minorities were targeted most often. I wish that this attitude would change some day and the situation for the minorities improves.
