Trees chopped down!

Author: Daily Times

Sir: Recently, around 60 trees were cut down along Ferozepur Road to construct an underpass and flyover at Kalma Chowk. Almost all environmental lobbies condemned this move. They even petitioned a case against this act in the Lahore High Court but it was rejected. The government claims that an underpass is the only solution to decrease the traffic congestion at Kalma Chowk; however, I disagree. Traffic congestion is not due to the size of the roads but due to the increasing vehicular traffic in Lahore. The only way to improve the traffic situation is to introduce an effective and economical public transport system, which will discourage people from using their own vehicles on the road, at least not on a daily basis.
