Scarce security funds

Author: Fateh Ullah Khan Kundi

Sir: The Awami National Party (ANP) government claims that they lack funds to equip the police sufficiently to combat terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province. However, the fact of the matter is that the KP police have been provided with brand new vans and motorcycles, but then the government stopped providing money for fuel. The police stations were asked to fulfil their needs on their own. When the SHOs began extorting money from local businessmen to meet their fuel expenses, the government blamed the former for being corrupt. This tiff resulted in returning of bikes and vans to the government. The KP is a troubled part of this country; very frequent bombs blasts and target killing wreak further havoc. It is therefore required of the ANP government to improve the law and order situation by increasing the security budget. The other day, I was appalled to see the speaker of the KP assembly escorted by eight police vans. On another occasion, the chief minister of KP arrived at a funeral escorted by ten police vans. Where does the money for the fuel of these vehicles come from? Is it legal to have an inflated VIP budget but none for the safety of an ordinary man?
