Failing on health front

Author: Daily Times

Sir: Health is directly related to the nation’s economy, politics and society. Education and health are undoubtedly recognised as a nation’s basic right. It is the responsibility of the state to provide these necessities to the nation. Pakistan is a member of theWorld Health Organisation and as a signatory, is liable to provide health facilities to its people. As of now, Pakistan has failed in its commitment. According to a health report, almost 80 percent of the total population of Pakistan has no access to primary healthcare; only 20 percent has access to emergency health services. More than 60 million are living below the poverty line and 60 percent have no access to clean water and proper sewerage system. Out of every1,000 newborns, 80 die. Approximately 400 basic health and rural health centres are non-operative. For 100,000 people, only 320 beds are available in hospitals and for 2,300 people there is just one doctor. One nurse or paramedical staff is available for eight doctors and only one specialist doctor is available for a population of 14,000.

Our government has not presented any effective plan to combat Hepatitis B and HIV. The effects of smoking, pan and gutka have not been taken seriously. In short, there is utter chaos out there and no one is taking responsibility for it.
