Sir: According to a news report, the DCO Lahore, Noor-ul-Amin Mengal directed to launch an awareness campaign regarding the adverse effects of shisha on health and the environment and recommended to close shisha cafes. He further added that people died and were hospitalised on a regular basis because of using tobacco and shisha.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) announced that a single session of smoking shisha yields a nicotine intake equivalent to more than one pack of cigarettes. Government has taken some steps to curb this social evil. In Sindh, the government banned shisha smoking in April 2012 under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, whereas in other big cities, it directed to launch health awareness campaigns to initiate stern action against the shisha cafes in the city to save the youth from this hazardous addiction. It is a point to ponder for government, policy makers and public whether only awareness campaigns can stop this social evil or we need a legal ordinance to stop shisha/hookah smoking at public places.
