Reasons for students’ suicide

Author: Tony Letford

Sir: All over Pakistan in the last one week, five students have committed suicide because of failure in examinations. The trend of suicide is increasing in our society, making it a serious problem. Suicide is strictly forbidden in our religion. Yesterday there were headlines on a news channel about a class 6 student who committed suicide because he failed in his examinations. He found facing death easier than confronting his parents. Some parents literally put a lot of pressure on their children that result in premature death of the latter through suicide. Obviously, parents are the ones who understand their child the most, therefore they should guide their child according to his abilities and talents. The onus also fall on teachers; they should have a friendly yet strict attitude towards students and try to understand what is hindering students from achieving good scores and help them accordingly.

Students should also understand that suicide is not the solution when they fail in examinations. They should learn how to face failure and instead of escaping, face the consequences and improve themselves for the future. There is always a solution to a problem. It only takes courage to find one. Failures are important in life to bring maturity and strength of character in us. Instead of giving in, work hard and find out where one went wrong.
