Mysterious death of Dr Qureshi

Author: Tony Letford

Sir: The mysterious death of a renowned neurosurgeon, Dr Aftab Qureshi, who was kidnapped on May 12 from Karachi, during a so-called operation in Hyderabad, has raised many serious doubts that need to be removed immediately.

The SSP of Hyderabad, Haseeb Beg, has denied that he was taken into confidence by the Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) chief, Ahmed Chinoy, or the Anti Violent Crime Unit (AVCU) over police action against the kidnappers in which the top neurosurgeon of Sindh, Dr Aftab Qureshi, was killed. He said, “Mr Chinoy did not speak to me at 2:00 am, so you cannot say that I or the DIG was on board as far this encounter is concerned.” This has made the role of Mr Chinoy dubious.

The statement of SSP Hyderabad could not be neglected in any case. This has raised fingers towards the controversial role of the CPLC chief, also pointed out by Dr Zulfikar Mirza while resigning from the important post of home minister in Sindh last year. As it is, Sindh has a dearth of neurosurgeons and the death of a renowned neurosurgeon like Dr Qureshi is an irreparable loss to the province. Nonetheless, I hereby appeal on behalf of the people of Sindh to President Asif Zardari, Prime Minister Gilani and Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry to take notice of the mysterious death of Dr Aftab Qureshi in a so-called police action and order a high-level inquiry, particularly into the controversial role of the CPLC and AVCU for their alleged involvement/negligence.
