Target killing

Author: Daily Times

Sir: Innocent Karachi residents are losing their lives in targeted killings and street crimes on a daily basis. It seems that there is no one to take responsibility for these premeditated inhumane acts of violence. The killers have support from people with vested interests. The so-called stakeholders of the city routinely denounce these acts but actually do nothing to avert them or distance themselves from the actual criminals. On the contrary, they deliver inflammatory speeches to ignite further the inferno of hatred. There is so much sense of insecurity that a common man has almost lost every hope and is bashing the government in frustration for not doing enough.

While there is chaos in society, the role of the police and warring factions is acting as a catalyst in deteriorating the situation. I fear for the day when a few remaining institutions will also lose their credibility due to being politicised by the government. That will be a complete breakdown of the system as we have seen in Rwanda, Somalia and Afghanistan.

I urge NGOs such as the Edhi Foundation and the Sindh Rangers to continue doing their work without any bias, since both could not be maligned for taking sides and had taken actions across the board.
