Sir: This is with reference to the news item “Polio ‘talks’ with Taliban” (Daily Times, June 22, 2012). The role of the media is appreciable in highlighting burning issues, especially the polio crisis in Pakistan. It is feared that Pakistan may face travelling restrictions to foreign countries, even to Middle Eastern countries, if it fails to eradicate polio by December 2012.
India has been able to pull itself out of the list of polio-endemic countries after having celebrated its first year of being polio-free on January 13. Now it is a great challenge for Pakistan to go neck to neck with India at least as both countries have almost the same generic scenario. Although the worldwide situation and trend of poliovirus has turned towards decline and conditions in Pakistan have also improved as only 18 positive polio cases have been reported till now, there is still a question mark on sustainability. These are enormous obstacles, but the success of the polio eradication programme lies on the shoulders of civil society, media, and especially female health workers.
