Sir: The collapse of a pedestrian bridge in Harbunspura Lahore has terrified commuters, who now look with suspicion at the building of overhead bridges in Lahore in record time. Our government needs to be cautious in approaching projects with undue urgency. The corrupt elements in the construction industry usually favour delaying government projects to mint maximum profit. Faced with a short deadline, tampering with construction material could not be ruled out. Before another major unfortunate incident happens, the Punjab government should get serious about the gravity of the situation and have the bridges built in the last four years checked for sustainability and durability.
