Issues in job placement

Author:

Sir: I wish to draw the attention of both government authorities and concerned officials of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) towards certain ‘unwritten’ policies adopted in job placements of medical professionals within its establishment. I have absolutely no doubt about the tireless efforts that the PAEC has put into developing its medical front and serving the nation in true spirit by providing the best medical attention to the ailing. It uses valuable government funds and resources in providing decent post-graduation training to doctors, thus sharpening their skills to combat various illnesses. Despite all such efforts, there is an increasing discontent regarding job placements in recent years among the doctors of PAEC. The area seems to be carrying an element of ill planning on the part of the establishment. In reference to a nationwide newspaper advertisement by PAEC in 2005 that announced the setting up of a number of new medical facilities in Gujranwala, Nawabshah, Gilgit, Bannu, Swat, etc, as its future ventures, it was clearly stated that the doctors coming from nearby localities would be preferred for placement in these centres. However, it never really happened. Later, I myself fell victim to it as instead of being given a chance to serve my own region, I was posted in northern Punjab. There are a large number of medical personnel who can be a valuable asset at local stations but are deprived of the opportunity. This results in doctors to resign from their jobs to join private setups or look for better opportunities abroad. PAEC should adopt a clear policy regarding this issue and build up local manpower to carry out smooth operation of its nationwide medical establishments. All medical posts should be filled up with local doctors as they can be in the best position to serve their region. PAEC is fast expanding its medical facilities and its technical/financial resources should not be wasted if the staff concerned is not willing to go there. No one from Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi would like to end up in Bannu, Swat and Nawabshah. Government officials should also look into the matter.
