Sir: Bureaucracy in Pakistan is a very funny business. In bureaucrats, good guys always finish first. During the reign of the past government, all those bureaucrats who tried to defend the rights of the citizens of Pakistan were unceremoniously removed or transferred to hostile places. The director of Dost was removed when he tried to stop the activities of the uneducated ex education minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Even lady officers were removed from service when they tried to stop corrupt practices in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ministries. Similarly, Communication and Works Secretary Mr Zahid Arif, who had managed the quick and efficient reconstruction of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s bridges and roads after the devastating 2010 floods and who had initiated the new project of constructing a new expressway on top of the current Grand Truck road or the defunct Peshawar railway line, from Peshawar city to Hayatabad, to help end the traffic problems of Peshawar, was unceremoniously removed because his family is unfortunately affiliated by marriage to the ANP.
It is no wonder that the bureaucratic system of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is in such bad shape. The Sarhad Development Authority has become a corrupt and messy institution with literally zero progress seen in four years. I guess the ‘prestigious’ Communication and Works department is heading towards the same situation. May God help us, the citizens of Peshawar.
