Riots in Dhaka

Author:

Sir: The ongoing clashes in Dhaka are of a very worrisome nature. A radical Islamic group called the Hefajat-e-Islam is marching on the capital demanding that all atheists be given the death penalty if they ever say or do anything that defames Islam. They are pushing for a 13-point agenda to enforce a strict version of Islam in the country. So far, some three people have been killed and 100 have been injured. What is this insanity? Why are such hardliners popping up everywhere and why do they insist upon taking people back into the Stone Age? Is it because they cannot exist in the modern era themselves and so they wish for everyone to regress with them? I hope the government in Bangladesh gives these people their just desserts by locking them in prison and throwing away the key.
