Sir: In the past, no civil government could complete its constitutional mandate and the process of democracy was always derailed in Pakistan. Now, it is time to celebrate the fact that a civilian government managed to complete its term without any interruption. However, the process of democracy has not been completed yet; we have just walked one step while there are many more to take. In a real democracy, the people are given the authority to elect their representatives, people who they think are responsible enough to solve their problems at all levels. Although the previous government was not fully successful in improving the living conditions of the people, the democratic process must go on because it is the only way to bring stability and prosperity to the country. May 11, 2013 is going to be a decisive day for the future of Pakistan. There are banners, posters, rallies and slogans being held and displayed across the country, especially in Punjab where the PML-N and PTI are giving a tough time to one another, claiming that they will bring real change to the country. Unfortunately, due to terrorist activities such political activities are not seen in the rest of the provinces. Some elements are trying to disturb the electoral process and are especially targeting the PPP, MQM and ANP’s leaderships and their workers. It is the responsibility of all civil military institutions, especially all political forces, to make their evil desires unsuccessful in order to bring political stability, which is the dire need for the sustainability of the democratic process in the country.
It is also the responsibility of the people to vote for the right people, bringing qualified and skillful leadership to the country, which is capable of resolving the issues we are facing such as terrorism, poverty, inflation, unemployment, load shedding and corruption amongst others. The new democratic government should strive to bring Pakistan onto the path of development through rule of law by introducing social and economic reforms and protecting human rights, especially those of women and minorities who are in a very vulnerable condition. Instead of electing corrupt politicians who have always served their own personal interests, forgetting the interests of the people, it is time to use the right to vote for the right leadership.
