Telecom company problems

Author:

Sir: The law and order situation and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) monopoly are some issues faced by telecom operators. Pakistani industry is facing a huge drawback due to the poor law and order in the country as no foreign investment is coming to Pakistan. The telecom industry was one that had a great boost in years past but is now facing difficult times due to zero investment. This industry was once the most developed industry in Pakistan, yielding huge revenues for the state. However, in a state where life and property are no longer safe, it is very hard to find investors and provide quality service. Recently, mobile services were hampered due to the riots within different cities. A telecom operator faces severe loss during suspended services. Although government policies are appreciated, are well-timed and in favour of the state, customer relations are suffering and growing weaker. A deeper look into the issues and the resultantly formulated policies is needed for the survival and further uplift of the telecom sector. Understanding the emotional experience of the terror-ridden masses is also to be given primary importance if the companies want to flourish. 3G technology bidding is to be expected and one can hope for another peak era for the telecom industry if our government and PTA do not make things worse like they did previously.

The PTA is not playing an active role for the development of telecom companies. There was news that the PTA started to block some IPs of leading telecom operators and ISPs just to create useless pressure — the result will be the loss of thousands of employees’ jobs and revenue. Suggested measures can be the insurance of quality services through well-informed advertisements. Introduction of positive messages within the state can also lead to long-term benefits and better coordination with the law and order enforcement agencies is required. This can increase insight about mutual interest and simultaneously improve opportunities for the companies. The government has to take some steps to improve the law and order situation. Government policies and the PTA should play a vital role here to give investors a fair and investment-friendly environment.
