Sir: I am a student and commute to a faraway area where my university is located. It takes more than one hour to reach my institute, all due to the traffic jams citizens bear in Karachi every day. The reason is simple: people here are seen driving cars all alone. They do not consider public transport worthy enough to travel on and thus bring private cars on to the roads, causing long hours of unbearable traffic jams. This extravagant lifestyle not only affects the congestion on the city’s major thoroughfares but also wastes precious resources in the form of gasoline or CNG. It is such a shame that our people do not give this problem a second thought. Instead of commuting in their own saloon cars, people should prefer public transport. Besides, I also want to urge the authorities concerned to take notice of the deplorable condition of the city’s public transport system, improve upon it and encourage the citizens to use it.
