Mobile phone snatching

Author:

Sir: I want to draw attention to routine crimes, chiefly mobile phone snatching. Mobile phone snatching has been on the rise in Karachi as an average of 3,000 cases are reported every month in the city of highest cellular density in Pakistan. In spite of this, it has not been taken into consideration by any authority. In many cases, the perpetrator, while snatching the mobile phone also snatches cash and other valuables from the victim. Today, I also became a victim of this crime; two men at gunpoint near Nazimabad snatched my mobile phone. I handed over my mobile without any resistance because I was virtually helpless at the time.

What can we do individually to protect ourselves? We are all convinced that traditionally the authorities have never and will never step up to solve such issues. Should we all start carrying weapons ourselves, or allow these snatchers to rob us at will? Why is it not possible for us to survive safely in this country? Why do the concerned authorities not take this matter seriously? Is it not the responsibility of the government to take some concrete steps to root out this crime? We need to raise our voices. This is a nuisance that needs a unified approach.
