Sir: This refers to the news story published in the media on January 28, 2013 about the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project titled: “China gives first installment of $ 448 million for the Neelum-Jhelum project.” This is a great achievement of the present government. The project was nearly stalled when in July 2012 the Chinese EXIM Bank had refused to fund the project in protest at the cancellation of ‘Islamabad Safe City Project’ awarded to a Chinese company by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Other donors following the suit also stopped their funds.
The situation is different now. The prime minister of Pakistan had also approved monthly payment of Rs. 2.5 billion for the project in December 2013. With the provision of Chinese and domestic loans, the work on this project should be completed in the stipulated time.
