The issue of mass graves

Author: Daily Times

Sir: The appalling discovery of the mass graves in the Tootak area of Khuzdar district of Balochistan was a painful experience, though not as painful and agonising as the silence of the concerned authorities that followed. Nawaz Sharif, before assuming the premiership of the country, had shown honest concerns in resolving the long-standing issues of Balochistan. He has also remained unmoved by the incident. The media of the country, otherwise shouting at the top of its voice on useless issues, also gave a lukewarm coverage to the issue. Eventually it was the Supreme Court’s intervention through a suo motu notice that highlighted the gravity of the situation and the negligence it has suffered at the hands of the government, both in the Centre and in the province. If we correctly remember such human rights violations, which have now become a routine thing in Balochistan, they have been previously meted out in Bangladesh as well. Have we forgotten the consequences of that ignorance, aggression, discrimination and injustice?
