Buses versus chaos

Author:

Sir: The Punjab government has announced a metro-bus service that will connect the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, with 150 thousand passengers travelling daily on this service. The 23 kilometre track, estimated at Rs 35 billion, will take one year to be completed. My concern for this project is based on two points.

First, how could a government spend Rs 35 billion on a project that is meant for people travelling on a single route? And second, if the government wants to go ahead with this project, what would the traffic plan be to manage the city’s traffic? According to the authorities, Murree Road will be totally shut off and traffic will be diverted towards Airport Road and Kashmir Highway. This could result in total chaos since the Kashmir Highway is incomplete and a lot of work is left to be done. I would suggest that the Punjab government should first complete the construction work on the Kashmir Highway and then launch the metro-bus service to avoid inconvenience for the people of the twin cities in the summer season ahead.
