Sir: The inauguration of the Tarbela Extension Project by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is a step in the right direction. It would to be a landmark achievement of the present government who had won elections on the back of promises to salvage the country from the clutches of load shedding and the energy crisis. The survival of the country depends on a continuous flow of power supply to the large- and small-scale businesses. The Tarbela dam extension will hopefully be completed by 2017. The estimated construction cost would be around $ 928 million out of which $ 840 million will be financed by the World Bank, as stated by the Ministry of Water and Power. The payback period of the project is three years. The generation capacity of the dam after completion of the extension project would be 1,410 MW. We look forward to many such projects by the present government.
