New negotiations

Author: Daily Times

Sir: Reportedly, a new committee will now talk peace with the Taliban. The committee to be formed by the prime minister is likely to consist of some senior politicians and army officers. If a long-term agreement is required, the same should be done by the political leadership without involving the army. The army should remain at the beck and call of the political government. If peace talks are successful, the army will honour the same and, if otherwise, the army will go for an operation as per the desire of the government.

The government of the PML-N must know that the people elected them with a thumping majority to solve their problems, especially those related to law and order. The public in general wishes that their elected government will take bold political decisions without army indulgence. Let the army do its own job. In the past, agreements reached between the army and Taliban under the military regime of Pervez Musharraf remained intact and effective only for short periods since those were not backed by political will. It is needless to point out that the nation is fed up with terrorism and therefore the political government should act promptly before it is too late.
