Sir: This is in reference to the news item ‘Pakistan fans pray for a son’ (Daily Times, March 7, 2014) about the status update on ‘Meri Jaan Pakistan’s’ Facebook page. Not only am I personally a firm believer of ‘bachay do hi achay’ (two children are enough), I also agree entirely when people say a family is complete when there is a son and a daughter both. At the same time, I do not think the people of our country are ready for a statement like the one given above. People, especially those from the lower and lower middle class backgrounds, who look up to Afridi, will be encouraged to think that having a son is essential as they are backed by thousands of people who also want Afridi to have a son. Many might even feel it is justified to not want a daughter. I think people, especially media persons, should understand the repercussions of what they say or write as it has a vast impact. As far as the ‘boom boom’ is concerned, I believe he has four beautiful daughters whom he has brought up very well and, if he were blessed with a son, he will undoubtedly shower him with the same amount of love and care.
