Democracy in Pakistan
Sir: Democracy is considered to be both a system of government and way of life. It is the least defective political system discovered by man yet. Democracy can be inconvenient when the leaders elected by people are corrupt, incompetent and not real representatives of the people. Unfortunately in Pakistan the elected majority in the National and provincial Assemblies are those who have bought political power with their money, to use their political power to make more money. Their convictions and objectives are not to serve the people but to look after their personal interests. This is the real reason that a segment of people want an ‘Islamic’ Sharia form of government, and a caliph with absolute power, while the other, greater segment of people want real democracy, replacing the present system of first-past-the-post elections with a proportional system of representation.
