Sir: According to a report published by the Movement of Solidarity and Peace in Pakistan (MSP), about one thousand women belonging to the minorities (700 Christian and 300 Hindu) had been converted and married Muslims. These women were either abducted or forced to elope. The report further adds that due to fake investigations, the courts declare such marriages valid after recording the statements of the women. The courts usually do not bother to know whether or not the statements were given under coercion. Also, independent witnesses do not come forward out of fear of being accosted by goons. The MSP’s report is damaging and serious to say the least. The constitution of Pakistan and many sayings of Quaid-e-Azam have ensured and guaranteed religious and social liberty to the minorities. But things for minorities have become very difficult and many of them have taken asylum in Thailand and European countries on the grounds of religious persecution in Pakistan.
The country is earning a bad name. Those at the helm of affairs, especially in Punjab and Sindh, should immediately act, taking stern action to curb this ugly practice.
