Saving Rohtas Fort

Author: Daily Times

Sir: I would like to draw attention to Rohtas Fort, which is a historical garrison fort located near the city of Jhelum. The fort was built by Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century in the Afghan-Persian architectural style, giving it a beautifully prominent look and attracting visitors. During a recent visit, I found that the fort was suffering from extreme neglect; there were only seven people working there. When I spoke to the man in charge, he told me that there were no funds available for maintenance and reconstruction of several parts of the fort.

The Rohtas Fort is a national and world heritage site. It represents Pakistan’s architectural style and defines the culture of Pakistan. I would request the Punjab government, which is directly responsible for the upkeep of Rohtas Fort, to provide enough funds and pay attention to the reconstruction of the damaged part of the fort. The museum of the fort is also always closed to the public. The government should provide all facilities to visitors who come from different parts of the country to see this grand fort.
