Sir: Around 1.4 million Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) will be used in the Indian elections this year. These machines are made in Hyderabad and Bangalore. The voters just have to press a button in front of the candidate’s name or his electoral symbol and the data would be electronically transferred to the control unit. These EVMs also have Braille for blind voters.
For the first time in India voters can also choose a “None of the above” option. This option is brought as activists said voters were forced to choose between candidates with criminal backgrounds.
Meanwhile in Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf’s government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is insisting that the biometric system should be used in the local government elections. But the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is not in a mood to use this technology.
It will be a great service to Pakistan if the ECP follows the example of the Indian elections and introduces both the EVM and the ‘none of the above option’ in the next elections.
