The plight of beaches

Author: Daily Times

Sir: What once used to be a tourist attraction has become a source of aversion. I am talking about beaches in Karachi. There is absolutely no concept of cleanliness though the Sindh government has arranged for taking toll tax from people visiting these beaches.

Come summer and the beaches become a hotspot for Karachiites. Neither do the beachgoers take care of cleanliness nor does the administrative wing of the government appointed to maintain beaches take the responsibility to clean the waste, unless it begins to stink.
Recently my visit to Sandspit left me in despair. The beach was not as clean or safe as it used to be about a decade ago. Today, families prefer not going to these places because of security threats both from the terrorists and environment. What are we left with? These were the only places left for the middle and lower middle classes to visit for recreation. The rich prefer farmhouses and securely closed water parks.
The authorities concerned must maintain the beaches, which are known throughout the world as the most loved picnic spots.
