Sir: In heartbreaking news, three boys have drowned in a canal in Faisalabad. The youngest, a 10-year-old boy, was taking a dip in the water to beat back the sweltering heat when the current swept him away. Two other boys who dived in to save him also drowned. This incident should serve to highlight the dangers of ‘taking a swim’ in a canal as there are many who cannot afford expensive swimming pools in private clubs. They have nowhere else to go and choose to swim in dirty canal water where, besides devastating hygiene conditions, they are in danger of drowning also.
The government should arrange proper swimming facilities for the poorer segments of society so that they too can have some recreation without risking their lives.
