Environmental conservation

Author:

Sir: It seems like today there is no one in our country who cares about the environment. People have so many other problems to think of that they are losing sight of the dangerous environmental issues we face. Today, our country’s air, water and soil, are all under constant assault and if that was not bad enough, we now have developed a habit of living with this pollution around us. Looking at the rest of the world, we have also started lip service about “going green” and “doing something” for the environment but in reality we have done nothing to spread awareness about important environmental problems. Government, media and environmental agencies all seem to have neglected the importance of awareness of the conservation of nature and its resident species. Today, we all need to wake up in a big hurry, before it is too late to restore things that we have destroyed. We are recklessly destroying our environment by cutting trees and plants, by throwing polluted water from industries and sewerage systems into our fresh water reserves. Air pollution is growing every day from heavy traffic on the roads, which is responsible for global warming and also introduces heavy metals into the air, which is deadly for not only us but for all other forms of life. We need to realise the fact that we have been careless towards nature and we need to understand the importance of environmental conservation to save all forms of life and to maintain healthy ecosystems.

The first step should be the inculcation of information and awareness in people’s minds about environmental issues and why conservation is important; media campaigns can help a lot. People should not burn tires on roads in their protests against electricity or any other thing because this introduces heavy metals like mercury, lead, arsenic and chromium into the air, which are dangerous for humans even in trace amounts. Instead of using motorcycles or cars one can ride on a bicycle, which is environment-friendly. In short, there are so many choices for us to adopt in place of choosing something that destroys our environment.
