LB elections and literacy

Author:

Sir: Local body elections are the best way to transfer democratic rights to the people. Organising elections is not the only responsibility of the government. The induction of educated and middle class people at this level will strengthen the democratic process.

It is pertinent to mention that the Election Commission of Pakistan and all the parties have not given any importance to educated people in this process. They have not laid down any condition like having a bachelor’s degree for the contestants at the union council level.

It is true that our parliamentarians made fun of the bachelor’s degree when having at least a bachelor’s was made a condition to run for elections, but it doesn’t mean that if we failed at one level, we should stop doing it.

The success of a democratic system lies in including better people. Otherwise, our problems will remain unsolved.
