Sports and Pakistan

Author: Dr Mohammad Taqi

Sir: Watching the football world cup matches, I marvel at the nationalism projected by the spectators in every match. We Pakistanis have been deprived of this enjoyment for long. The negligence of the Punjab government in preventing the attack on the Sri Lankan team was criminal.

In every country games are organised to keep public happy. During the Roman era the gladiators were pitted against animals and against each other in death duels. Even our neighbour India conducts IPL games. In Pakistan we are starved of entertainment leave alone sports.
International cricket has been removed from Pakistan for the last five years, after the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009.
It is a small consolation that the footballs used in the 2014 Brazil world cup have been manufactured in Sialkot.
Kudos to the Pakistani people!
