Article 245 dilemma

Author: Daily Times

Sir: The government’s decision to invoke Article 245, requesting the army to work in aid of civilian authorities from August 1 for three months has provoked a lot of criticism from almost all political parties and current affairs analysts.

In spite of the government’s explanations, there is a general suspicion that the government resorted to this action on the PTI threat to march on the capital on August 14.
Imran’s plan of bringing one million protestors to the capital and then staying there till their demands are met cannot be called anything but political blackmail. Surely a million people do not have the right to overturn the democratic mandate of over 180 million people.
Whatever the size of Imran’s procession, it cannot be allowed to hold the citizens of Islamabad hostage indefinitely. The bellicose tone of the PTI leadership betrays its violent designs.
