Sir: The Employees Old-Age Benefit Institute (EOBI) established under the Ministry of Labour and Manpower caters for old age benefits for employees of both the private and commercial sectors. The institute gets no funds from the government and its source of income is based upon contributions made by private sector companies. The institute has flourished over the years and has assets worth billions of rupees.
Unfortunately, the institute has fallen prey to corruption. Little attention has been paid to the plight of the pensioners. A meagre pension of Rs 3,600 continues to be paid to pensioners, although the government has set the minimum pension level at Rs 6,000, which is also very little in these days of galloping inflation. The government needs to pay special attention to the plight of the EOBI employees and ensure that they get pensions above the minimum threshold of Rs 6,000, in addition to improvement in other benefits like health cover.
