Sir: Indeed, the constitution is a law agreed by the people’s representatives that sets out how the state will be constituted and run, our rights and responsibilities as citizens and the creation of particular institutions to support and safeguard our democracy. Our constitution contains an important democratic principle called the separation of powers. That means that the power of the state is divided among three different but interdependent organs or arms.
Our constitution lays the foundation for an open and tolerant society based on democratic values, social justice and fundamental human rights and is hailed around the globe as a very progressive document. An obligation is also placed on the state to respect, protect, promote and fulfil these rights. When it comes to the right to life, unfortunately Pakistan is one of those countries where victims are denied even their fundamental right to register an FIR (First Information Report) against the accused. How difficult it is to get any FIR registered in this country has become evident from the recent Model Town incident. Undeniably, our past and present rulers have done everything possible to defeat and destroy the very spirit of the constitution. Better visit Pakistan beyond Zero Point to know the reality of our constitution and rights given to the people.
