Giving parliament its due

Author: Daily Times

Sir: It is heartening to watch parliamentarians visiting the National Assembly regularly for a change. How long will they adhere to this practice will determine their seriousness about giving parliament its due importance. For the time being, the Assembly is being used to avert a crisis and gain the support of the opposition to save democracy. Everyone is happy today seeing arguments traded in a tolerant manner in parliament. The happiness is worth celebrating and was long overdue indeed. This celebration can turn stale if the real cause for which parliament has been created in the first place is not materialised. Democracy is for the people, of the people and by the people. Unless people take centre-stage, the fruits of democracy will remain elusive. Parliament and the constitution have been created to serve the people, not the politicians as is being done today. The real test will come when the crisis will be over and this floor will be used for the betterment of the people.
