Journalists’ vows

Author: Daily Times

Sir: Journalists play a vital role in the functioning of a democratic society. However, in spite of enjoying the right to freedom of speech enshrined in the constitution, journalists have to live under constant threat. Many of them had already paid the price of speaking the truth with their lives. Pakistan has been declared one of the most dangerous countries for journalists. The conflict-ridden areas such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan are the least hospitable places for free reporting. According to an estimate, more than 40 journalists have been killed in Balochistan only over the last five years. Journalists have been demanding protection since long, but unfortunately, the government has been doing nothing. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan recently published a report mentioning the hazards faced by journalists. Why is the state not fulfilling its responsibility of providing safety to its citizens?
