Smoking on the rise

Author: Daily Times

Sir: Recently I looked outside the window of my car when it stopped at a traffic signal and the sight of school students smoking cigarettes with great pride made me disappointed and left a feeling of uneasiness within me. There is a sudden upswing in smoking among the younger generation. It would not be wrong to say that at every tuck shop or street corners one finds a bunch of young boys holding cigarettes in their hands with no shame. Now, the question arises of why these young boys are inclined towards such injurious and unhealthy habits that too with a sense of pride. Is it because of the conventionally believed mindset of having a ‘cool’ image’ or does it show some kind of depression? We live in an era where information is ample and people are generally aware of the good and bad effects of nearly everything. It just takes a click to know. Most young people are aware of the dangers of smoking but they still take it lightly. We as a nation have to step in to stop our newer generation from smoking.
