Sir: Irum Farooq, a member of the Sindh Assembly from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, pointed out in the Assembly the precautionary steps that were taken by the Sindh government to mitigate possible damage from Cyclone Nilofar. The Singh Assembly Speaker Siraj Durani engaged her in a frivolous and scornful tone by asking what Nilofar is, why all cyclones are named after women and saying there is no need to worry as Abudullah Shah Ghazi would save us from the cyclone. The female parliamentarian showed maturity and did not engage in pointless counter-arguments. People do not expect such frivolous behaviour, that too containing gender biased attitudes from a man occupying the esteemed position of Speaker of the Sindh Assembly. Already many questions are being asked about the terrible governance in Sindh. The Sindh government has earned a bad name through its extreme lethargy and inefficiency in responding to natural disasters. One expects them to make some improvements with the passage of time but instead time has proved that a majority of the legislators from the PPP are slow learners when it comes to performance, transparency and apparently even conversational ethics.
