Putting an end to honour killings

Author: Daily Times

Sir: The curse of honour killings has swept through Pakistan like a tidal wave. There are more than 1,000 reported cases of women being killed for the vague concept of ‘honour’ in our country every year by male members of their families. Not much is being done to alleviate their suffering but one can only hope that these devastating statistics serve to wake the authorities out of their slumber.

It is a welcome move that the perpetrators of the honour killing of a young woman outside the Lahore High Court (LHC) have been awarded the death sentence by an anti-terrorism court. This shows that there is still room for justice within the system. I hope this sets a new precedent for how to deal with this despicable crime.
