Human rights violations in Sindh

Author: Daily Times

Sir: It is an undeniable fact that human rights violations are on the rise in Sindh. The incidents of child abuse, child marriages, killing of members of minority groups, honour killings and forced marriages have become common in Sindh while a large number of incidents of such violations are not reported due to social and cultural taboos. Besides, child labour and bonded labour are going on unchecked.

In the aftermath of lack of implementation of laws against heinous crimes, incidents of child abuse, women’s harassment and rape are increasing day by day. Recently, an inhuman incident of strangling after gang-rape of a five-year-old girl Sindhu Soomro, took place in Larkana. This is the outcome of moral degradation, barbarism and savagery existing in our society. In this way, Sindh has become a safe haven for criminals. The latest example of human rights violations can be seen in Tharparkar, where the people are deprived of basic needs such as food and drinking water as well as adequate healthcare facilities, which have caused the deaths of hundreds of children. Civil society organisations, social activists, media and educational institutions should play a role in mobilising people to ensure implementation of human rights laws in our society.
