Desensitisation to violence

Author: Daily Times

Sir: Modern technology has made us well connected while media keeps us aware about the latest happenings around the world. However, it has made us desensitised. People are increasingly becoming desensitised to violence on television. Every day, news about fatal shootings, killings and bombings across the world are aired on media. Earlier, we used to feel shocked over each incident but now we have become immune to such violence on media. It has become a daily matter that we hear reports of violence in different parts of the world. It doesn’t affect us the way it used to. Viewing and reading reports about violence on a regular basis has become a routine matter. This is something that all of us are going through and is regrettable. How we report and discuss such incidents on the media matters. The media needs to report such news in a responsible manner and we must also try to stop distancing ourselves from these acts. The exposure of violence on media should be limited as much as possible to provide our children with an environment in which they could grow into responsible adults. Waiting for the media to evolve its own ethics isn’t a viable option anymore as general indifference to these acts is becoming too widespread.
